The winter I arrived – January 1963 – the Jade bay was a frozen landscape and the trees on the causeway
to the school were crystallised with ice.

Indeed, 1963 was colder that the memorably cold winter of 1947-48 and only beaten (acc. to UK records) by the winter of 1740. I recall going fishing on a tidal strech of water in 63 and being unable to break the ice!
